Hand Rejuvenation Procedures

Hand Rejuvenation Procedures

The visible signs of aging hands often start occurring at a young age. As early as a person's 30s and 40s, skin damage can start affecting the hands and, as the years go by, even daily chores like washing dishes, walking the dog and driving a car add up to take their toll. Seemingly overnight, hands begin to look older and weather-beaten.

With a series of advanced but minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Afshin David Rahimi can make your hands appear to 10 years younger. The following procedures, all of which Dr. Afshin David Rahimi does on an outpatient basis, require only local anesthesia and minimal sedation. There is minimal recovery time, and patients usually experience immediate yet long-lasting results. In addition, when done in combination with each other, these procedures result in an even greater improvement that each one alone.

Fat Transfer

The technique involves removing fat from one part of the body, such as the thigh, and painlessly injecting it into the back of the hand, plumping up the hollow areas. Excess fat can be frozen for future fat transfer procedures (Forever Young has a licensed & State approved Tissue Bank). The procedure takes 30 minutes to one hour and recovery takes approximately seven to 10 days. The results from a Fat Transfer lasts for years.

Photofacial and IPL

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology removes brown spots and fine blood vessels of the aging hand. Through a new one-to-two hour process called photorejuvination, cold gel is applied to the area and the doctor moves the IPL hand-piece, a smooth glass surface, across the skin. The IPL hand-piece emits pulses of light creating a slight stinging similar to the snapping of a small rubber band. An anesthetic cream may be used, but is seldom required. The Photofacial treatment last for about 30 minutes and is generally administered in a series of four to six sessions. Redness may last for a few hours but most patients find they can easily return to work. The results last from months to years.

Chemical Peel

A superficial or deep chemical peel removes the top skin cell layers, eliminating dead skin, tightening pores, and producing new collagen and elastic fibers. The best candidates are usually those with fair, thin skin who have a tendency toward fine wrinkling or scarring. It's important to note that deeper chemical peels are usually not recommended for highly pigmented skin, such as Asian, black and Mediterranean, or oily complexions. Recovery takes seven to 10 days and results may not be completely evident for up to a year but will last for many years.

Thermage CPT

The Thermage CPT system is the only FDA approved noninvasive, non-ablative (meaning no injury to the skin and hence no oozing, bleeding, etc.) radio-frequency system. This procedure combines the heating of skin and underlying structures with radio-frequency followed by external cryogen cooling. The combined effect creates an immediate collagen contraction. Improvement appears slowly over weeks as collagen re-mold to the contours of the hand and the skin and underlying structures tighten. The doctor uses topical anesthesia (EMLA, ELEMAX) combined with light sedation. There is no recovery time and most patients may return to their daily activities the next day. About five percent of the patients experience mild swelling and bruising which resolves within seven to 10 days. Results last from one to two years.
