What is it?

Restylane is a natural cosmetic dermal filler, made from non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. The filler is injected under your skin to smooth out lines and wrinkles, shape lips, and fill in acne scarring. Approved by the FDA in 2003, Restylane delivers long-lasting results and, unlike other dermal fillers, carries little risk of allergic reaction.

What happens in a Restylane treatment?

Your Restylane treatment will take place in your doctor's office. It is usually administered under local anesthesia, especially if the lip is to be treated. The procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the extent of the work to be done. When the areas to be filled have been identified and marked, the doctor will inject the Restylane beneath the skin. The hyaluronic acid in the filler attracts water under the skin, helping to preserve the filler's volume.

You will be able to go home shortly after the procedure and possibly immediately resume normal activities. There may be some swelling around the treatment site for a few hours, as well as some bruising, which can be covered with make-up. Treatment of the lips might lead to some swelling and tenderness for a day or two.

Within a week, the full result of the Restylane treatment should become apparent, with effects lasting from four months to a year. These, however, will depend on a number of factors such as the skin's existing structure and the patient's lifestyle and age.

Is it safe?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your body, which also means that in time it will naturally absorb into your body's tissues. Because Restylane is not manufactured from animals, risk of allergic reaction is minimized. Any possible side effects will be discussed by your doctor in your initial consultation. Individual results may vary, consult your doctor to make sure you are a good candidate for this treatment.
